Peppermint Patty:
What do you think security is, Chuck?
Charlie Brown
Security? Security is sleeping in the back seat of the car. When you're a little kid, and you've been somewhere with your mom and dad, and it's night, and you're riding home in the car, you can sleep in the back seat. You don't have to worry about anything. Your mom and dad are in the front seat, and they do all the worrying. They take care of everything.
Peppermint Patty:
That's real neat!
Charlie Brown
But it doesn't last! Suddenly, you're grown up, and it can never be that way again. Suddenly, it's over, and you'll never get to sleep in the back seat again! Never!
Peppermint Patty:
Never?
Charlie Brown
Absolutely never!
Peppermint Patty:
Hold my hand, Chuck!
...I don't know what to make of Charles Schulz nowadays. For all the happiness that Peanuts brought me, I felt terrible when I found out that he himself seemed a permanently unhappy man.
In these post-schooling days, I do feel like I'm moving to the front seat and doing all the worrying. I don't think I always harbored a distinct resolution of what the future should be for myself...it seems like something that I only developed as I started seeing the vast and deathly calm ocean of adulthood, and how much navigation would be needed to sail through it.
I don't know if I am in the front seat, though. It's much easier to have the illusion of control, but I'd like to believe I can still sleep in the back seat, and have my abba take me home as he deems fit.
